Exploration and Production

By the end of the year 2018, Repsol had acquired the mineral rights to 10 production/development blocks in Spain that extended over a net surface area of 331 Km2.

Net production in 2018 was 0.5 Mbbl of liquids and 0.1 Bcf of natural gas, with a total net production equivalent 0.5 Mboe (1,320 boe/d). The estimated net proven reserves for liquids and natural gas at the end of the year were 3.1 Mboe.

Milestones 2018

The Spanish Authorities have extended the exploration permit for the Casablanca platform, located in Mediterranean waters off the coast of Tarragona, for another 10 years.

We operate five refineries in Spain (Cartagena, A Coruña, Bilbao, Puertollano, and Tarragona) which act as a single facility, and in 2017 had a total distillation capacity of 896,000 barrels of oil/day.

In 2018, our refineries in Spain processed 41.6 million tons of crude oil, which translates into an average use of refining capacity of 93%, and a refining margin index of 6.7 dollars per barrel

During said period, improvements were introduced in the Bilbao refineries - the company invested in two new compressors for the FCC unit. The Cartagena refinery was also upgraded with several energy efficiency improvement projects in the crude oil unit, Hydrocracker, and Hydrogen unit.

Repsol is a lead player in the Spanish and Portuguese chemical products market. Production is concentrated mainly in Spain, in two petrochemical facilities located in Puertollano and Tarragona. Repsol also has several subsidiary companies through which it has access to plants where polypropylene compounds, specializes chemicals, and synthetic rubber are manufactured - this last product is manufactured by Dynasol, a 50% partnership with the Mexican KUO Group.

Lubricants, Asphalts, and Specialized Products

Repsol manufactures and markets petroleum products (lubricant bases, bitumens for asphalts, extender oils, sulfur, paraffins, and propellant gases) for industrial sectors.

In November 2018, the online sale of Repsol lubricants was launched via a proprietary Amazon channel in Spain.

Repsol sells the Company’s oil and gas products and other products through its network of service stations, and through other sales channels which provide a differentiated service to sectors such as aviation, shipping, big industries, and final consumers. In 2017, our network in Spain had 3,350 service stations.

LPG and Autogas

Repsol is the top-selling company in Spain for liquefied petroleum gases. Sale volumes of GLP rose to 1,154,000 tons in 2018 - 678,000 tons of which were bottled GLP, and 652,000 tons of bulk, piped and other forms of LPG.

AutoGas (automotive liquefied petroleum gas) is currently the most widely-used alternative fuel in the world. In 2018, Repsol had 732 supply points all over Spain, where 73,140 cars fueled by Augogas have been registered.

Gas Wholesaler, Distribution and Trading

Our presence in Spain focuses on transportation, sale, trading, and regasification of liquefied natural gas. All these activities are managed centrally from our Madrid headquarters.

Electricity and Gas

In 2018, Repsol has begun to operate in the electricity-generation and electricity-and-gas retail business in Spain through a new brand, Repsol Electricidad y Gas.

In November, the company purchased the unregulated low-emission electricity generation business from Viesgo (hydroelectric plants, and combined-cycle plants), and its regulated and unregulated gas and electricity retailers. The agreement translates into the purchase of a low-emission generation capacity of 2,350 megawatts (MW), and a client portfolio of around 750,000 customers - Repsol hopes to strengthen its position as a multi-energy provider with this move.

Furthermore, we purchased the company Valdesolar Hive, S.L. in 2018, which is developing a photovoltaic project in Valdecaballeros (Badajoz) that will have an installed capacity of 264 megawatts, and could be operational as early as 2019 or 2020.
