To guarantee that our facilities are safe and in order to protect people, Repsol adopts a proactive approach to risk management in all the life cycle stages of an activity. This means guaranteeing the correct identification, assessment, and management of the risks associated with our processes and industrial assets. Furthermore, we apply the highest international standards to the design of facilities, as well as strict operational, maintenance and decommissioning procedures.
In 2018, we continued to work on reviewing Safety and Environment regulations to simplify their requirements. Specifically, we have revised regulations on land transportation, product and operational safety, and the assessment of environmental, social, and health risks, in addition to the management of environmental situations.
We have also updated the safety regulation applicable to all Repsol chemical products. This regulation seeks to increase safety at each stage of the products' life cycle.
At Repsol, we have the ten basic safety rules, which help prevent accidents for people involved in our operations. All our employees and contractors must follow and comply with said rules.
For years, our company has had a proactive safety program that enables it to manage process safety to prevent industrial accidents, control risks and manage them effectively, detecting industrial accidents.
In 2018, the process accident rate was reduced by 24% compared to the previous year, due to a decrease in accidents and 5% rise in operating hours. As a result, the process accident rate is already 49% below the company's annual target.
