Lubricants, Asphalts, and Specialized Products
Once again, the Lubricants business improved its leadership position in Spain in 2018, compared to the previous year, with a 3% growth in sales, an increase that was even larger on international markets at 13%. In Asphalts, bitumen sales grew by 2%, while specialized asphalt products grew by 8%, despite low demand in their natural markets (Spain, France and Portugal). In Specialized Products, historical maximums were recorded in the sales of Group II and III base oils and anti-ozone waxes, which increased 38%, 8%, and 1%, respectively.
The most outstanding milestone this year was the acquisition of 40% of the Mexican company Bardahl. This joint venture produces and markets lubricants under the Bardahl and Repsol brands in Mexico, in addition to serving as a production center for our lubricants in Latin America. This operation will contribute to the business's goal to double sales volumes and reach 300,000 tons by 2021.
In 2018, we continued to invest to improve the production capacity of the Puertollano lubricants plant (Spain), which produced 132,000 tons, 5,000 more than the previous year.
On the other hand, we started selling Repsol lubricants online through our own Amazon channel in Spain and, in 2019, we will expand this to countries such as Portugal, the United Kingdom, France, and Germany.
