In November 2018, our company acquired Viesgo's unregulated low-emission electricity generation businesses and its retailer, which enabled us to become a relevant player in the Spanish electricity market and reinforce our position as a multi-energy supplier.
With this operation, Repsol increased its presence in the Spanish electricity and gas retail market significantly, with a total generation capacity of 2,952 megawatts (MW) and a market share exceeding 2%. Between November 2018 and February 2019, the number of customers increased from 750,000 to 830,000, mainly thanks to the good performance of service stations as a sales channel.
Furthermore, this operation represents an essential step in complying with our roadmap for the energy transition, which, according to the Strategic Plan, aims to achieve a retail market share in electricity and gas greater than 5%, with 2.5 million customers, by 2025.
The electricity and gas business is operated through a new subsidiary, Repsol Electricidad y Gas, which has an attractive offer all over Spain, with cutting-edge digital solutions and exclusive benefits for our customers, such as discounts at our network of service stations.
The electricity sold using the Repsol brand is certified as 100% low-emission. The company has hydroelectric plants in northern Spain and two combined-cycle gas plants in Algeciras (Cadiz) and Escatrón (Zaragoza).
